I Think if you talk of the 1970s and 60s, its quite erroneous because of the system of war during those days. Most tactics used then was the guerrilla. You bet you can catch even the most hardened of armies for some time but the challenge remains barring off counter attack. this fact is what made M7 have stroll in the pack when he turned tables from the then Ug. president Ob*te. First, it is easy to topple rebels who have seized control of power mainly becoz of this simple facts. They get into power with few soldiers.

Now it will be the duty of those who have gone into power to defend a retaliation. By then, countries like Rwanda, even Burundi had no military prowess. Ask the war experts, they will tell you much success in war is not achieved through propaganda or expressing military prowess. This leads to failures because you make yourself very predictable. In 1969, The Shifta wanted to coincide with their northern counterparts without much success and has made them experience the devastating effects of their actions up to now when Mzee Jomo Kenyatta had to sign a joint peace deal with Hallie Selassie of Ethiopia. This I believe and I hope was to restrain Kenya on its could be actions against its "war-like" neighbors

It is the intents and motives of the somali issue that is cushitic and Somali Bantu differences that is causing this turmoil hence the desicion by KDF is viable to create lasting peace and ensure there is order and sanity and a government. I even suggest that were it not for the war-torn country's turmoil, maybe who knows, we could have concentrated on prospecting for worthy minerals at the so called (NFD) northern frontier district

As in the case of the KDF read more about the episode of the Shifta war at wikipedia

Such small and hilly countries need to just invest heavily on Air defence, i am not envisaging them being in constant state of aggression with their larger neighbours. If they have to have fighter squadrons then turbo props like the one below would be quite economical for them.

A good air defence capability and a couple attack choppers will suffice for such a country.

@ Admin,
Why don't we create a page for the Burundi military too? They have done us proud in Somalia and we need to share their experience and others.

defiantly a laser illuminator and most likely with a range finder.. I can rule it in with the two binoculars type glasses.
p.s not to be confused with a laser designator.

an illuminator enables you to see during poor visibility esp. at night. the device where the Head of state placed his hand on seems to be a coordinate reader with a laser pointer at the front.  the pointer is for singling out or pointing at targets when two or more units are observing group of enemy assets. i.e I will observer (points at) this area/items you observer the remainder. a green spot will appear while looking through the illuminator  where the pointer is pointing at only visible through the illuminating equipments  and therefore not alerting the enemy as it would be for a flash light.  using the coordinate you can send in mortar, artillery, direct airborne assets etc.

unlike a designator an illuminator can't be used precision attacks. directing or hitting targets using smart munitions.  aka laser guided/guiding

what you would expect via an illuminator

in designator (munitions' following a laser beam) precision targeting

The Rwanda version are similar to this:

This turret is armed with twin 23 mm AZP-23-2 cannon and a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun with turret traverse and weapon elevation being powered with manual backup. The turret of from Ukraine and used on their BTR-94s. The BTR-94 APC is fitted with new BAU-23x2 remotely controlled weapon station, armed with twin 23-mm guns of the ZU-23-2 towed anti-aircraft gun and coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun. The 23-mm guns have effective range of 2 000 meters. This armoured personnel carrier can engage both ground and low-flying air targets.
